” I believe Dr. Lennie Echterlling’s long standing service to the Virginia Counselors Association, his dedicated commitment to educating and training preservice and in-service counselors, and his personal qualities demonstrate the qualities lived by John Cook. 

Lennie served as Director and Professor of Counseling at James Madison University. He has more than 30 years of experience in promoting resilience, particularly following crises and disasters throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and India. For over six years, he joined forces with graduate students to provide play-based therapeutic services to the children and families of Virginia National Guard members deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dr. Echterling is a renowned author and honored colleague.His books include include “Crisis Intervention: Promoting Resilience and Resolution in Troubled Times” and “Thriving! A Manual for Students in the Helping Professions.” Dr. Echterling has received James Madison University’s Distinguished Faculty Award, Virginia Counselors Association’s Humanitarian Award, the National Counseling Vision and Innovation Award, and Virginia’s Outstanding Faculty Award.

I have known Dr. Echterling for over 30 years and in a number of capacities. I have found him to be a perceptive clinician, a patient researcher, an effective educator, a talented and cherished colleague, and deeply valued friend. He is a devoted, enthusiastic advocate for the well-being of people and communities in Virginia and around the world.
