It is with sadness and a deep sense of loss, that we inform Virginia counselors of the passing of Dr. Pete Warren on Friday March 22, 2013 in Lynchburg, VA, after a short illness with Acute Respirator Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Pete has been a friend, advocate colleague, and counselor educator for the professional counselors throughout his life. He was a highly respected and beloved counseling leader who received countless awards from counseling organizations as well as other groups in Virginia.
Among his most notable accomplishments:
- One of the 5 Founding Directors of the Virginia Counselors Association Foundation
- VCA Foundation Board Director Emeritus
- The first VCA Executive Director
- Former President of VCA
- At Lynchburg College, he served as Professor Emeritus of School of Counseling and Human Development, Dean of the School of Education, Dean of Students, Director of Counselor Education, and Interim Director of Church Relations.
- The VCA Foundation has created a program to honor of Pete Warren, to celebrate Pete’s contribution to VCA and the VCA Foundation. Students who show promise as potential leaders of VCA and the Foundation, apply and are selected as recipients as Pete Warren Student Fellows.
- Elected to the Lynchburg City Council and served one term as Mayor of Lynchburg
A celebration of Pete’s life was held on Saturday, March 30, at Lynchburg College Snidow Chapel at 11:00 AM. A reception followed in the LCMemorial Ballroom. The College has made available a Video of the Memorial Service for those who were not able to be there or want to re-live the memories, the laugh and the love that defined Pete Warren. Those who wish to make a donation in Pete’s honor, can contribute to the Lynchburg College D.L. “Pete” Warren scholarship fund which is awarded annually to a student enrolled in the graduate counseling program, or a charity of your choice. The VCA Foundation will accept you donation in Memory of Pete Warren, and send an acknowledgement to his family.
